What is RUBBER – INJECTION & COMPRESSION MOULDING?

Rubber compression molding is a manufacturing process primarily used for molding rubber materials. In comparison with Injection molding, Compression moulding offers high-quality, and more durable parts with lower tooling costs. This process is widely used to manufacture parts for diverse applications such as automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, construction, and electronics.

Types of Compression

Compression Moulding

Compression moulding is a widely used technique where a pre-measured amount of rubber is placed into a heated mould cavity. The mould is then closed, applying heat and pressure to shape the rubber. This method is efficient for producing high-quality, durable parts with minimal waste. It’s ideal for large, thick-walled products such as gaskets, seals, and bushings.

Rubber Extrusion

Rubber extrusion involves forcing unvulcanized rubber through a die to create long, continuous shapes, such as tubing or seals. The process allows for a wide range of profiles to be produced with excellent consistency. Rubber extrusion is especially effective for manufacturing flexible components like hoses, profiles, and seals used in various industries.

Injection Moulding

Injection moulding involves injecting heated rubber material into a mould cavity under high pressure. This process allows for the mass production of complex shapes with high precision. Injection moulding is ideal for creating intricate, detailed parts and is commonly used in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and medical devices.

Materials Handled

Silicone
Natural Rubber (NR)
NBR (Buna-N)
HNBR
EPDM Rubber
SBR
Neoprene (CR)
FKM (Viton)
Polyurethane (PU)

Silicone

Silicone rubber stands out for its superior temperature resistance, making it a go-to material for applications involving extreme heat or cold. It’s also flexible and resistant to UV radiation and chemicals, making it ideal for medical, automotive, and electronic applications, especially in gaskets and seals.

Natural Rubber (NR)

Natural rubber offers excellent tensile strength and flexibility, making it a preferred material for products that need to absorb vibration or shocks. It is commonly used in automotive tires, seals, and vibration dampening components.

NBR (Buna-N)

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), also known as Buna-N, is highly resistant to oils, fuels, and other chemicals, making it suitable for automotive seals, hoses, and gaskets. It is widely used in industries where exposure to oil and petroleum-based substances is common.

HNBR

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) offers enhanced resistance to heat and chemical degradation compared to standard NBR. It is often used in automotive and industrial applications requiring high-performance elastomers, such as seals and O-rings.

EPDM Rubber

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is known for its excellent weather, ozone, and UV resistance. It is commonly used in outdoor applications like roofing membranes, window seals, and hoses, providing long-lasting durability.

SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber)

SBR is a synthetic rubber known for its abrasion resistance and durability. It is commonly used in tires, conveyor belts, and other industrial applications where wear resistance is critical.

Neoprene (CR)

Neoprene is highly resistant to weathering, oils, and chemicals. Its versatile properties make it suitable for a wide range of applications, including wetsuits, hoses, gaskets, and seals used in harsh environments.

FKM (Viton)

FKM, commonly known as Viton, is a premium fluoroelastomer that offers excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemicals. It is widely used in aerospace, automotive, and chemical industries for gaskets, O-rings, and seals that must withstand extreme conditions.

Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane is known for its toughness and resistance to abrasion, making it ideal for high-wear components like wheels, bushings, and rollers. It provides excellent resilience and can withstand both mechanical stress and environmental factors.

Precision Tolerance

With Drawing Without Drawing
Linear Dimension +/- 0.01 mm
+/- 0.004 inch
SPI Commercial
Hole Diameters +/- 0.005 mm
+/- 0.002 inch

Linear Dimension

Linear dimensions are critical for ensuring parts fit together accurately, especially when working from precise drawings. With or without drawings, maintaining these tolerances ensures that your parts will function as expected, whether for industrial, automotive, or custom applications.

Hole Diameters

Accurate hole diameters are essential for components that rely on proper alignment and fit, such as in sealing applications or mechanical assemblies. These tolerances ensure reliable performance, even in high-stress environments.
